A 19-year-old Australian tourist, Julia Barresi, reportedly suffered a seizure and was hospitalized while vacationing in Bali. Initially, it was suspected that she had Bali Belly, also known as traveler’s diarrhea. Due to the severity of her condition, the family decided to put her in a medically induced coma and arranged for her evacuation back to Australia for further treatment.
Julia’s mother, Jen, revealed that although Julia had some health issues in her childhood, she maintained a healthy lifestyle and enjoyed good health in recent years. However, during their Bali trip this month, Julia experienced a sudden seizure and was rushed to a local hospital.
“She’s a healthy, vibrant, switched-on, beautiful human being. She’s my best friend in the whole wide world,” Jen said as reported by the Daily Mail.
Jen claimed that Julia had never had a seizure. Upon learning about her daughter’s condition, Jen immediately booked a flight to Bali and upon arrival, arranged for Julia’s transfer to The Royal Melbourne Hospital in Australia.
Bali Belly Suspected, But Cause Unconfirmed
Jen believed the seizures might be linked to low sodium levels caused by Bali Belly condition. This common condition among tourists is often caused by contaminated food or water. However, Jen mentioned that Julia always applied cautious approach to food hygiene and water consumption.
“She’s not a big drinker. I don’t even think she would have drunk much at all because she was sick so she wouldn’t have touched it,” Jen added.
The exact cause of Julia’s seizures remains unclear. The family awaits further medical investigations to shed light on the situation.
